Mac mini vs Mac Studio for AI work
Updated October 28, 2026 · By the SuperiNow team
Apple's desktop Macs have quietly become some of the best machines for running AI models at home. The reason is unified memory: the processor and graphics share one large pool of memory, so a Mac with 64 GB can give most of it to an AI model. On a Windows PC, the model has to fit in the graphics card's much smaller video memory.
Apple updated both machines in September 2026. Here's how to choose.
The current lineup
| Chip | Unified memory (max) | Starting price at launch | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mac mini | M6 | up to 32 GB | $899 |
| Mac mini | M5 Pro | up to 64 GB | about $1,699 |
| Mac Studio | M5 Max | up to 128 GB | $2,499 |
| Mac Studio | M5 Ultra | up to 512 GB | $5,499 |
Prices and configurations change, so check Apple's site for current options, or compare the models side by side. Memory can't be upgraded later on either machine, so buy all the memory you'll need on day one.
What each one can run
Using the rule of thumb from our GPU guide (about half a gigabyte per billion parameters at 4-bit, plus overhead), and leaving room for macOS and your other apps:
| Unified memory | Comfortable model size (4-bit) | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 16–24 GB | up to about 8–14B | Trying local chatbots, light coding help |
| 32 GB | up to about 14–20B | Everyday local AI alongside your other apps |
| 64 GB | up to about 30B, or 70B models squeezed in | Serious local use, document chat, coding assistants |
| 128 GB | 70B models with room for long conversations | Power users and developers |
| 192–512 GB | the largest open models | Researchers and AI developers |
Mac mini: best value
Choose the Mac mini if you want to experiment with local AI, run small and medium models, and use AI tools in the cloud (ChatGPT, Claude, HeyGen) day to day.
- The M5 Pro with 64 GB is the sweet spot: enough memory for 30B-class models, at well under Mac Studio prices.
- The base M6 is a great everyday Mac, but 32 GB maximum limits how big a model it can hold.
- It's small, quiet and uses little power, which matters if it runs models for hours.
Mac Studio: for bigger models
Choose the Mac Studio if you want to run 70B-class models comfortably, work with long documents, or develop AI apps.
- The M5 Max with 128 GB runs 70B models with room to spare.
- The M5 Ultra goes up to 512 GB, enough for the very largest open models. It's overkill unless that's specifically your goal.
- More GPU cores also make answers come faster, not just bigger models possible.
What neither one is ideal for
- Training models from scratch. Both are built for running models. Serious training still happens on NVIDIA hardware or in the cloud.
- Some AI tools are NVIDIA-only. Many popular tools (Ollama, LM Studio, image generators) run well on Apple silicon, but a few research tools assume an NVIDIA graphics card. Check that the tools you need support Macs.
The short version: for most people, a Mac mini with the M5 Pro and 64 GB is the best value for AI work. Choose a Mac Studio with 128 GB or more only if you specifically want to run the biggest open models locally. Either way, buy the memory up front: it can't be added later.
